Domains

What is a domain? Why do we need it?

Description:

No two finger prints are identical. So is a domain. It is a unique identity in the Internet world.  Your name may be duplicated but your cellphone number cannot. There are three major domains which is called Top Level Domains(TLDs).  These generic TLDs have three flavors. Namely .net .com and .org.

Domain Name Registration:

Domain Name Registration is same as Land Registration. To own a Land you have to go(ofcourse with your seller) to the Registrar's Office and get it registered. The case is the same with Domain Name Registration.  There are a plenty of ICANN(the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) accredited registrars out there. Octowave will catch hold of your finger and take to one of the ICANN accredited registrars where your domain can be registered after availability. Ok, then what next? Continue reading...

Part and Parcel of a Domain:

DNS:

First and foremost is the DNS(Domain Name System). Though we humans speak  numerous languages, computers can speak or understand only one language that is binary language. Because of this, there is no linguist wars among them.  Binary means two, that is 0 and 1. 8 bits form a byte and 32 bits form an IPV4 address.  A computer without IP address is a man without life. Now what has DNS or Domain Name System to do with domains. Domains are understandable by humans whereas IPs are understandable by computers.  It is here the DNS jumps in. The DNS just resovle your domain that is yourdomain.com to corresponding IPV4 address for example 66.24.80.65. DNS is just a phonebook where names and numbers are present. It is easier to remember names rather than the number. Thus to visit your website and view its contents you just type in your domain name in the browsers address bar, the https protocol sends your domain name to DNS and the DNS redirects to web serever where your files are hosted. Finally the communication from your computer to the DNS and from DNS to webserver and back to your computer is completed and the content of the website is displayed in the browser.

SSL:

Like a security to a house or building, so is a SSL(Secure Sockets Layer) certificate to a domain. Domains starting with Http://www.yourdomain.com is insecure whereas domains starting with Https://www.yourdomain.com is secure. SSL certificates protects web page data by encrypting and decrypting. Thus securing the website from hackers. Domains starting with Http:// just exchange plain and unencrypted data between the server and the client. This is insecure and may paralyze the entire website.  So a SSL certificate is a must for a website.  There are several SSL certificate providers from where we can get one and save on to your website.

Email:

Gone are the days of ancient history when information were exchanged  with pigeons and horses. After that in later ages, paper and pen were used to exchange information. But today information are exchanged with finger tips.  The emergence of computer, mobile and internet have turned the world upside down.  The word 'mail' has changed to gmail and hotmail which is 'email' in general. Today each one of us has an email account to communicate with others. You might already have one or many free email ID's. But getting an email ID with your domain is different. If your domain is 'xyz.com' your email would be 'yourname@xyz.com'. So, for a local or global business an email is essential.
