Own a Server

What is a own server? How to build it?

Description:

As there are several servers found in the Internet world, We will be talking about only one server, that is, web server.  For any online business to keep running round-the-clock a web server is essential. Generally speaking any electronic device need power. A server is no exception.  To keep a server up and running, five factors are focused.  They are Power, Internet, OS, Hardware and maintenance.  Let us delve into one by one.

Power:

A rack server power consumption is 200w.  But our "own server" projects servers consume less than 50w. This helps us to build our own server without heavy investment. We are not going to use heavy power as Data centres do. For a small scale business running about 10 dynamic websites, these types of low power consumption servers are more than enough.  The only thing we need is uninterrupted power supply and a steady internet connection.  Thus with inverter and battery set up, we can fulfil this demand.

Internet:

Next to electricity, Internet is demanded and most needed service for the people.  To run our "own server" we need a broadband connection.  There are numerous Internet service providers out there.  You can select one service provider near you.  Business owners running a web design company can host their web sites on their own servers. This reduces the hosting charges.  The only thing the business needs is uninterrupted power supply with 24/7 internet connection.

OS:

There are three major operating systems (OS), windows, mac and linux.  Our focus is on Linux OS only. Linux is open source. To use Linux we need no money but mind, a brilliant mind that can mould linux to whatever shape you need. Whereas windows need license to run on our server. Linux is secure. The rein is in your hands.  You can gallop on the linux-horse to whichever direction you like and with
whatever speed you like.

Hardware:

Servers come with various specifications.  Depending on its usage the cost and specification differs.  To build our "own server", the basic specification is this. Speed 2.5Ghz, quad core, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD. With these configuration we can run 10 dynamic websites on our server flawlessly.

Maintenance:

As we will be maintaining and managing our own server, the cost may drastically decrease.  But a technically skilled person is needed to maintain or manage the server. The step is to look after the power needs.  An inverted with battery attached can provide continuous power for server which consumes less than 50w. The next thing to look into is broadband connection.  An FTTH connection with 200Mbps speed is enough to host and run about 10 websites on our server.  Apart from these regular backup of databases and continuous checking of server logs are necessary to protect our server from hackers and malicious attack.
